History
The foundation of the stone masons’ workshop of Ulm Minster dates back to the time, when in June 1377, under the supervision of master builder Heinrich Parker II, the foundation stone for the church was laid. In 1543, after extensive maintenance works at the beginning of the century, construction works on the Minster were stopped.
After 300 years, in 1844, construction works were resumed under city architect Ferdinand Thrän. Later he was appointed Master builder of Ulm Minster. In 1890, under the guidance of master builder August Beyer, the church building was completed, when the main tower in the West had been finished. At that time, Ulm Minster was the largest Protestant church in Germany with the highest church tower in the world (161.53 metres).
Today, in the 21st century, the masons’ workshop is responsible for the preservation and continual restoration of the stone structure of the building.
